Hanging Rock

Rachel Holbert, the Director of Education at Norman Bird Sanctuary, says iconic Hanging Rock in Middletown  began to form 450 million years ago with collisions between North America and Africa.

In an educational program through Norman Bird Sanctuary, Holbert will give the full story of Hanging Rock on July 13. She says it’s important for people to know the history and formation of our landscape.

Holbert explains there were mountains in New England hundreds of millions of years ago that were higher than the Himalayas. Those mountains had rivers and streams, and it’s the sediment from those streams that formed Hanging Rock.

When it comes to the formation of Narragansett Bay, Holbert says it was carved out by a glacier about 20,000 years ago.
