Rhode Island League of Charter Schools’ Executive Director Keith Oliveira joined GoLocal News Editor Kate Nagle on GoLocal LIVE where he spoke to the Charter Public Schools Fair taking place on Thursday, January 24 (see more details below) — and recent test scores.
“In terms of school performance obviously it ran the spectrum — we had some very high performing schools particularly ones down in South County and then we have some that need work, but most of our schools fell somewhere in the middle," said Oliveira.
"I think what we see around the state is no one is satisfied with the outcomes and I think that’s in large part to the fact we’ve changed tests so much over the years — three tests in five years — and the way it works is schools develop their academic programs and curriculum that’s aligned to a certain set of standards and your assessment assesses how you’re performing towards those standards. How do you plan the longitudinal consistency of your academic program when you’re assessed in a different way? We need consistency continuity, and commitment to a long term system — then schools then can adjust to that system," said Oliveira.
The 2019 Charter Public Schools Fair is taking place from 5 p.m to 7 p.m. on Thursday, January 24 at Times2 Academy on 50 Filmore Street in Providence.
"It’s a prelude to our upcoming charter school lottery, so you can come and meet representatives of each of our 19 members of the League of Charter Schools - and if you’re interested you can apply for the upcoming lottery. It’s just a way for the community to come out and learn more about our charter schools and plus it’s for those families that are really interested in high-quality public education options," said Oliveira.
