University of Virginia Professor of Political Science Jennifer Lawless joined GoLocal News Editor Kate Nagle on GoLocal LIVE, where she spoke to the latest in the international fallout from the death of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi — and the focus on the migrant caravan of thousands making its way through Mexico towards the United States.
As to the possibility that United States President Donald Trump could try to shut down the border to the large group completely, Lawless offered the following.
“I think a lot depends on the timing. A lot depends on when they get there and a lot depends on if they arrive after the election,” said Lawless. “Whether the Republicans take back control of the House and whether the Republicans gain seats in the Senate. It’s a very political question and the extent to which Trump has political capital and leverage is going to be much closer in two weeks.”
"Full efforts are being made to stop the onslaught of illegal aliens from crossing our Souther[n] Border. People have to apply for asylum in Mexico first, and if they fail to do that, the U.S. will turn them away. The courts are asking the U.S. to do things that are not doable!"
