Beach Closures Trending Downward in RI’s Narragansett Bay, Says EcoRI’s Carini
Sunday, May 21, 2017
Frank Carini with EcoRI spoke to research showing that beach closures in the state are trending downwards, reporting that with 38 closure events at 'High Concern' beaches, 2015 was the sixth-highest year of the 16-year record.
"Overall, estuarine waters in Narragansett Bay largely support recreational uses, with 85 percent classified as acceptable for swimming and boating. The Providence River estuary, the Palmer River, several coves within Greenwich Bay, and Newport Harbor are all areas that were exceptions to good water quality and were classified as impacted for swimming and other recreational uses," wrote Carini.
