UK Variant Hits Italy Causing New Lockdown as Cases Spike, Says Couto da Silva

Rebecca Couto da Silva joined GoLocal LIVE from Bolzano, Italy, and said that the UK variant has arrived -- and that lockdown measures have increased.
"The UK variant got to us — not just to Italy but to our province — I haven’t heard that the Brazilian or South African ones have," she said. "Brazil — there’s obviously a pretty strict travel restriction so the very few people that could come and go are Brazilian citizens. And it’s not easy anyway, because of the travel restrictions there are really no flights."
"The UK version is definitely here, it’s definitely close. In the European Union, they’ve designated deep red zones — and we’re in a deep red zone here. One thing we’re doing here with the university is we’re actually studying healthy populations," she added. "We have really high numbers [from testing] and it’s sort of in some way we’re being punished for doing these studies, and in another way we do have a lot of people here who are very anti-masking — there was a gathering of 200 people in a restaurant with a capacity of 89 that got broken up and something like 150 people were cited."
