Rhode Island House Minority Leader and Republican gubernatorial candidate Patricia Morgan joined GoLocal News Editor Kate Nagle on LIVE on Wednesday to speak out on the nominating process at the Rhode Island Republican Party convention - and how she said it played into the larger political picture.
“Lawrence DiBoni and Carlos Lopez,” said Morgan, of two members that she said she learned were on the nominating committee, who backed Cranston Mayor and former failed Republican gubernatorial candidate, Allan Fung -- and currently work for him.
“As you probably know, both work directly for Mayor Fung. Both are people who can be fired by the Mayor at any moment, and both are 100% compromised. DiBonni is the Director of Economic Development for Cranston, reporting directly to the Mayor while Lopez is the Mayor’s Chief of Staff, also reporting directly to the Mayor," said Morgan.
Morgan said that she learned of the staffers’ appointments to the nominating committee only recently.
“If anyone doubted that the process was corrupt, this is a sure fire way to know that it was. The Chairman’s indignation at his ‘honest’ process was nothing more than a smokescreen to hide the fact that he handpicked people that would, in turn, nominate his hand-picked candidate for Governor,” said Morgan. “Make no mistake, the Chairman appointed these people. He knew who he was appointing, and either didn’t care, or intentionally put people on the nominating committee who work for the Mayor, who not only blindly would vote for him, but advocate for him and twist the process and minds of the few who weren’t hand-picked to support Allan.”
At nearly 11 PM on Wednesday, Fung was claiming victory.
“We're excited to take the enthusiasm from every city and town and turn it into a great victory for good government and strong communities in 2018,” said Fung. “I'm so proud that we're uniting the party faithful and focusing our eyes on the big target: The Governor’s Seat.”
