Italian resident Rebecca Couto da Silva said that her region of the country is back in lockdown after coronavirus cases continue to spike.

On February 17, Italy’s seven-day average of new cases was 11,913 — as of March 14, the seven-day average rose to 22,237 cases.

On July 14, 2020, the country recorded just 114 new cases.

“We’re locked down — [the rest of] Italy hasn’t been as locked down as us,” said da Silva, who lives in Bolzano. “According to the EU, this has been a deep red zone, and most of Italy has been a red zone.”

“It looks like there’ll be more restrictions, they’re looking at restricting weekend activity, especially with Easter coming up and nice weather. I think they want to make it clear that it’s still dangerous to be out on the weekend,” she added. “We’ve been locked down for a month now in terms of an 8 PM curfew. Nothing’s open unless it’s essential, no restaurants, only takeout after 8 PM or it has to be delivery — and no bars.”

“I do believe that people are identifying the variants as the issue — so it’s either there are variants, even undetected ones, or there’s just socializing happening that we’re not aware of,” said da Silva. “It’s not easier or more laissez-faire than before but again, people are tired. So on a bus without about seven or eight people, you see someone rip off their mask and sort of look around at everyone like what are you going to do.”
