Kristine Frech, Teach for America

Kristine Frech with Teach for America Rhode Island spoke to “Education Awareness Week” taking place this week in the state in conjunction with Junior Achievement, when she joined GoLocal News Editor Kate Nagle on GoLocal LIVE.

The week brings elected officials and business leaders from across the state to serve as guest teachers who will develop and lead special lessons based on their areas of expertise offering students a firsthand look into different career paths.

“For so many of us, the last time that we walked into a school was when we ourselves were in school. Our students face tremendous challenges,” said Frech. “We know that our school buildings aren’t where we wish they are. We know that we have a significant need for math and science teachers. But we also know there are tremendous things happening in our schools.”

“So for business leaders, they get to come in, see our kids and their tremendous potential. We know that they’re going to be more invested and they’re going to be thinking of ways they’re going to influence our sector,” said Frech. “I always like to say that opportunity and achievement gaps cannot be solved in our classrooms alone — it takes every sector of the community to come alongside public education and tell our kids that they’re worth it — and so this a great week to see that happening.”

Founded in 1990, Teach For America recruits and develops a diverse corps of teachers to make an initial two-year commitment to teach in high-need schools. Today, Teach For America has nearly 60,000 alumni and corps members.
