The U.S. Gondola Nationals is a yearly event held in a city with a robust gondola operation.
This year, Rhode Island's own Providence River was selected to serve as the home base for Gondoliers from as far away as the California coast to compete in multiple races including single and tandem distance, sprint, and slalom events.
Marcello Haynes, owner, and president of La Gondola in Providence joined GoLocal LIVE’s Chelsea Guay to discuss this weekend's events as well as the positive effect an event like this will have on the city overall.
"Teams come from California, Boston, and even Minnesota. There will be many points along the river for watching the races, with the distance event running between the Crawford Street and Point Street bridges" Marcello explained. "Additionally, a gondola will be available during the day both Saturday and Sunday for free gondola trips, with any donations made going to the U.S. Gondola Nationals, a nonprofit devoted to promoting and advancing the Venetian style of rowing in America."
Head down to Providence this weekend and cheer on the rowers from the Rhode Island team, or those from your area, as they row for gold at the 2018 USGN!
