Eleven-year-old Jaala Smith represents Pawtucket, Rhode Island, on FOX’s cooking show MasterChef Junior. Smith’s love for cooking started at the young age of six, and developed into a talent.
“My experience on MasterChef was amazing. Meeting new friends and the judges, and seeing Hollywood and Los Angeles was the best experience you could ever have,” says Smith.
On season seven of MasterChef Junior, Smith goes head to head with twenty-four junior chefs from across the country.
Celebrity chefs Gordon Ramsey, Christina Tosi, and Aaron Sanchez judge MasterChef Junior, so for Smith and the other contestants, the pressure is on.
“At first it felt really scary because they’re really famous and cook amazing dishes at high-end restaurants. But you get to cook for them, so you really don’t want to mess up.” Most of all, Smith made sure to make friends and have fun with this experience, “My favorite part of LA was getting to see the mountains and riding a horse to the Hollywood sign. I got to see the walk of fame and all of the celebrity stars.”
Smith is also a young entrepreneur and capitalizes on her cooking skills by selling her homemade jams at local farmers markets. Jammin With Jaala offers a variety of seasonal jams, spreads, and preserves.
“I make the jam at home, and I bring about twenty-five jars of each flavor to the farmers market. Today I brought my Oreo cookie spread, triple berry, and cranberry orange. My favorite is the Oreo cookie butter, I would put it on a piece of bread or a spoon because I would eat it right out of the jar,” says Smith.
On episode one of MasterChef Junior, Smith wow’d the judges by incorporating her signature jams into a breakfast dish she prepared. Smith plans to save money from her jams to go to school, “I am saving up money to go to college. The school I want to go to is Johnson & Wales, that’s where my mom and my judge Aaron Sanchez went.”
