Paul Winter Brings Solstice Concert to Providence

Fans of world music might argue that the winter solstice and musician Paul Winter are forever linked, and they might be correct.

This year, Providence gets to hear for itself. The Grammy award-winning musician and bandleader is performing Friday December 3 at the First Baptist Church of America, in concert at 4:30pm in "The Sounds and Rhythms of The Winter Solstice with Paul Winter."

The concert marks the culmination of the Art League of Rhode Island's 10th anniversary celebration, and fittingly, the ALRI will follow Winter's concert with a Winter Solstice Party at the historic Providence Art Club.

Echoing a winter spectacle

Winter's annual Winter Solstice Festival, held in New York's Cathedral of St. John the Divine, is a spectacle that has been celebrating the shortest night of the year for more than 30 years. Thousands of concertgoers and solstice celebrants, not to mention tens of thousands of National Public Radio fans who've caught NPR's broadcast of the  show, have witnessed the moving spectacle.

For the live experience, just a few short weeks before RI's own shortest night, go to ArtTix, here, for tickets. Prices begin at $50 per person for the concert, up to $150 for the concert and Art Club Celebration. For more information on the ALRI, call 331-3465 or visit artleagueri.org.
