Tuesday, June 19, 2012
Looking good, Providence. The capital city has just been named the #1 eye-healthy city in the country by VSP Vision Care, the nation's largest not-for-profit vision benefits and service provider.
In its first-ever Eye Health City Index, VSP calibrated its ranking based on the percentage of people who received an eye exam in 2011 among those who have Vision Care vision benefits in markets where VSP covers 100,000 people or more.
The Top 10
Providence was the only New England city named in Top 10 in the 2012 Eye Health Index. The rest of the rankings looked like this:
#2 Wichita, KS
#3 Raleigh, NC*
#4 Birmingham, AL*
#5 Denver, CO
#6 Columbus, OH
#7 Dayton, OH
#8 San Jose, CA
#9 Oklahoma City, OK
#10 Sacramento, CA
"Eye exams are a critical wellness tool that not only checks the health of the eyes but also checks for signs of serious chronic diseases,” said Susan Egbert, director of eye health strategies at VSP Vision Care. “We hear remarkable stories from doctors and patients who credit an eye exam for saving their lives. We commend the residents of each of the top ten cities for recognizing the importance of utilizing eye exams a part of their healthcare routines.”
