Church Street Coffee’s Toomey Expands Coffee Taps in RI

Denis Toomey, founder of Church St. Coffee has his cold brew down to a science and is bringing taps to Rhode Island. The Massachusetts based business has grown throughout New England and is providing an in-demand product. 

With taps already in place at cafes and retail shops such as Brooklyn Brothers in Cranston and Kaffeology in Newport, Church Street is supplying Rhode Islanders with a coffee beverage that is higher in caffeine and lower acidity.

What started as a side hustle selling homemade cold brew to coworkers turned into a full-time business for Toomey. “I was making a cold brew for my friends and family, and it kind of blew up in the fitness industry where I worked. I used to just sell it out of the back of my jeep.”

Church Street’s cold brew coffee is an elevated beverage, “We know that coffee that is steeped in cold water is seventy percent less acidic, so it is easier on your stomach lining. It is also thirty-four percent more caffeinated.”

Toomey was looking to offer a product that was healthy and packed bold flavors without using sugary syrups or additives. “I started brewing different flavors using natural, raw ingredients. I wanted to put a little twist on it. I have a mocha, a vanilla and a cinnamon cold brew. We throw the cinnamon and the Madagascar vanilla bean into a food processor and roast it with the coffee beans. It almost tricks your mind into thinking that there is a sweetener in your coffee.”

Toomey sourced his beans from a small farm in Costa Rica, where he was born. “This farm is using natural fertilizers and chemical free pesticides, which is super clean. Anything that I am steeping for twenty-four hours has to be clean.”

In Massachusetts, Tommey is in the process of remodeling a massive three thousand square foot space to brew coffee and beer. The space will serve as a brewery, a manufacturing center, as well as a bar.

“It will be located in Canton, Massachusetts. We originally intended it to be a manufacturing facility. But we felt that the space was so beautiful, we wanted to turn our workspace into a cafe and incorporate beer as well. We wanted to maximize the space to it’s fullest potential.”
