Providence College announced the honor on Monday.

Providence College’s Raul Fonts, associate vice president and dean of admission & financial aid, was awarded the New England Association for College Admission Counseling's (NEACAC’s) Harry R. Carroll Award.

The Harry R. Carroll Award is the organization's highest honor. It recognizes college admission counseling professionals whose contributions and achievements merit special recognition, and whose work reflects the spirit and principles of a lifetime achievement award. The award was presented at NEACAC’s annual meeting on May 28, which was held virtually this year.

Fonts has been at Providence College since 2000, and has served as president of NEACAC, chair of its finance committee, a delegate for the National Association for College Admission Counseling, a faculty member for Summer Institute and Advanced Secondary School Summer Institute, on The College Board's guidance and admission council, and more.

In presenting Fonts with the award, NEACAC noted that, “He has mentored and supported countless admission professionals, and has an enthusiasm and commitment to doing the right thing. His moral compass is strong, and he argues passionately with anyone who stands in the way of access for students.”

Throughout his time leading PC’s enrollment efforts, Fonts has increased the number of admission applications submitted to record-high levels, and enhanced the selectivity of PC’s admission process. He also has increased the diversity of incoming first-year classes as well as the geographic reach of the College. He was heavily involved in the College’s decision to go test-optional, first as a pilot program in 2007 and later made permanent. He also added an early decision program and established a summer bridge program, both of which have been major contributors to PC’s enrollment and retention success.

Fonts previously worked at King’s College, LaSalle University, and the University of Scranton. He is a resident of Portsmouth, RI with his wife Meghan and sons Matthew, Andrew, and Luke. His son Andrew plays on the men's basketball team.
