Harris’ Casual Vogue Cover Sparks Controversy

United States Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris appears on the cover of this month’s Vogue — and not without controversy. 

“The hotly-debated image, which shows Harris in a black jacket and Converse sneakers, was not the one she had expected to run on the front of the print edition,” reported CNN. “A source familiar with discussions said Harris' team believed the cover would feature her posing in a light blue suit against a gold background.”

“An apparently leaked copy of the publication's February issue cover, shot in front of a pink and green background, began circulating online Sunday,” CNN continued. “The photo instantly attracted ire on social media for appearing poorly lit and styled, while others suggested it was "disrespectful" to the Vice President-elect.”

In social media, the images were called disrespectful with some “speculating that the image was deliberately washed out to lighten her skin” according to USA Today. 

Vogue said that the cover - featuring the Vice President in Converse Chuck Taylor sneakers, was a “tribute to her sorority days.”

“With Harris in the Converse sneakers that have become her trademark and a blazer designed by her friend, designer Donald Deal, the image captures Harris, the groundbreaking politician, while alluding to the path that led her to the White House,” wrote Vogue.
