Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo’s endorsement of billionaire media mogul Michael Bloomberg is coming under fire from one of Rhode Island’s most prominent Latino leaders.

Joseph Molina Flynn, Chair of the Rhode Island Rhode Island Latino Police Action Committee (RILPAC) took to Twitter to criticize Raimondo’s endorsement.

“I kind of wish Gina had consulted a few people from communities of color before deciding to endorse Bloomberg. That’s such an awful endorsement along color lines that people are having a hard time differentiating him from 45. Come on,” Tweeted Molina Flynn.

Bloomberg was battered in a Washinton Post expose this weekend.

"Several lawsuits have been filed over the years alleging that women were discriminated against at Bloomberg’s business-information company, including a case brought by a federal agency and one filed by a former employee, who blamed Bloomberg for creating a culture of sexual harassment and degradation," reported the Post.

"The most high-profile case was from a former saleswoman. She sued Bloomberg personally as well as his company, alleging workplace discrimination. She alleged Bloomberg told her to 'kill it' when he learned she was pregnant. Bloomberg has denied her allegation under oath, and he reached a confidential settlement with the saleswoman," according to the Post's report.

Stop and Frisk

RILPAC was founded in 1998 and “worked successfully to identify, communicate, and lobby for issues impacting the Latino community by holding candidates accountable.”

Bloomberg is widely criticized for his treatment of African-Americans and Latinos as Mayor of New York City.

An analysis by the NY ACLU revealed that "innocent New Yorkers have been subjected to police stops and street interrogations more than 5 million times since 2002, and that Black and Latinx communities continue to be the overwhelming target of these tactics. At the height of stop-and-frisk in 2011 under the Mayor Michael Bloomberg administration, over 685,000 people were stopped. Nearly nine out of 10 stopped-and-frisked New Yorkers have been completely innocent."

Stop and frisk exploded not under New York City Mayor Rudy Guiliani -- but under Bloomberg.

According to NBC News in November of 2019, "Addressing a black church in Brooklyn, Bloomberg said he was 'sorry' and acknowledged it often led to the detention of blacks and Latinos.

'I can’t change history,' Bloomberg told the congregation. 'However today, I want you to know that I realize back then I was wrong.'"

The Washington Post reports that Bloomberg faces, “The heightened scrutiny comes in the wake of a recently resurfaced recording of a 2015 speech in which Bloomberg defended New York’s stop-and-frisk policy targeting minorities.

It also comes one day after a Washington Post report on the lawsuits that have been filed against Bloomberg over the years alleging discrimination against women and sexual harassment at his company. A number of the cases have either been settled, dismissed in Bloomberg’s favor or closed because of a failure by the plaintiff to meet filing deadlines.”
