Summer Getting Off To A Sizzling Start

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

There are several unofficial beginnings to summer. The summer vacation season kicks off with the Memorial Day weekend in late May. Meteorologically, summer begins on June 1st. But most of us consider that summer gets underway with the Summer Solstice that occurs at 7:09 this evening. However, if you like summer heat and humidity, so far the weather has left a lot to be desired.

The Memorial Day weekend was, indeed, a toasty affair with plenty of sun and temperatures in the 80s but since then “summer” has been a complete bust. June has not seen the mercury climb above the 70s all month long and has averaged some 4 degrees below normal. To boot we have had at least some rain on 11 of the first 19 days. But, all of that is coming to an end, at least for a couple of days.

Readings should soar into the 90-100 degrees range across the area today and tomorrow along with strong, hazy sunshine and mid-summer humidity that, for some, is perhaps too much, too soon. It won’t last long as the heat begins to relent a bit on Friday and temperatures dip back into the 70s before the weekend is over.

It looks like we’ll go back into the cooler for much of next week as the month comes to an end. For heat and humidity lovers there is a better than even chance that summer beach weather will return for the 4th of July holiday.
