Providence’s Hurricane Barrier, Part 3: The Gates

Although the big structure with the big gates may get your attention, the truth is that most of the hurricane barrier that protects downtown Providence consists of a rock and earthen dike that tops off at 25 feet above sea level, more than enough to contain any hurricane surge. On the west side of the Providence River the dike walls off the Jewelry District from the potential flood waters and on the east side of the river it protects part of Fox Point. That part of the original dike built in the 1960s has been replaced with vertical concrete walls as part of the newly relocated Interstate 195.

Another major feature of that barrier is the existence of five large, steel vehicular gates (the attention-grabbers) which, when in the open position, allow traffic to pass through the dike but when closed become an integral part of the 3,000 foot barrier.The west end gates are located at Allens Avenue and on the property of the Manchester Street Power Plant. On the east side of the river the gates are located at South Water Street, South Main Street, and Benefit Street.
