Just thinking …

Does it seem like the sorry saga of Charlie Sheen’s meltdown is getting far more play in the media than Rhode Island’s financial crisis, the Middle East upheaval, the national economy and all other more important issues combined?

Spring ahead this weekend! But do you know anyone who really gets up at 2am Sunday morning to set the clocks ahead? Except, perhaps, Charlie Sheen who’s been up for 3 straight days anyway.

It’s hard to believe that we haven’t had a big snowstorm for well over a month. In fact, total snowfall since February 2nd has been only 2.8 inches and the last of the once monstrous snow piles in my driveway has disappeared. Still no crocuses have appeared though I’ve had reports of a few popping up in some of the neighbors’ flowerbeds.

Weather Trivia Quiz: When and where did Daylight Saving Time begin?

Have you noticed lately how much the landscape is changing in the southern end of downtown Providence? The demolition of the ramps and sections of the old extension of Interstate 195 is well underway and, frankly, it’s beginning to look like a whole new city in that area. Makes you wonder why the “powers that be” didn’t build the road the right way in the first place.

I’m taking bets on when the first day will be that I will be able to go out for a walk in my shorts and a tee shirt. Of course, the neighborhood kids having been doing that all winter. Ah, youth! Sometimes we seem to be living on different planets.

Whatever happened to Railroad Salvage, Ruby Vine and … Choo Choo?

Let’s see … the Governor proposes that the sales tax will go down from 7 to 6 percent but there will be more items and services taxed. There also will be a 1 percent tax on some other items not previously taxed. So far I haven’t seen any items taken OFF the list. Not matter how you spin it … it’s still an overall tax increase. Right? Do you think that’s something we all need right now?

If you’re a fan of NFL football, you’re already beginning to lose out on one of the most interesting parts of the off-season … putting pieces of your favorite team together through free-agency. If the current talks break up without an agreement that it be a real bummer. It’s hard to believe a group of millionaires (owners and players) can’t figure out how to split up a 9 BILLION dollar pie.

Weekly Daylight Update: As of today (Thursday) there is now exactly 2 hours, 31 minutes and 39 seconds more daylight than on December 21st. By St. Patrick’s Day we will have almost exactly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness.

Is it time for Providence College to drop out of the Big East, drop it down a notch and start playing some of their old traditional but less high powered rivals … Holy Cross and Fairfield, to name a couple, come to mind. Just askin’.

Weather Trivia Quiz Answer: Daylight Saving Time was first proposed by a New Zealander, George Vernon Hudson, in 1895 but was not adopted until 1916 by most European nations and by the United States in 1918.

Ooooops … Gotta go … There’s some guy at the door yelling … “Winning!”

sick sick of Charlie Sheen,  yes,  we should pay more attention to our own state Rhode Island and pray for it.  Give the New Governor a chance and pray for him.
Oh yeah, railroad salvage?  every night!!
We still could have another huge snow storm, remember April 1st all those years ago? I missed work that day, and it was less than a mile to get to work.  Plows didn’t go down our street!!! Only in Rhode Island.  Let’s address the Pot Holes!!

John Ghiorse

Yup, we’re under the gun as far as snow is concerned right into April but if we do get hit, it won’t hang around like it did in February. Back in the 70s we had a snowstorm in May!
