URI Opens With 51-26 Loss at Fordham
Friday, August 30, 2013
After a disappointing 2012 season that saw the University of Rhode Island football team finish 0-11, the hope is that things will start to get better in 2013.
Last night, the Rams opened up the 2013 season against Fordham in the Bronx, NY and fell to the Rams 51-26.
Former UConn quarterback and transfer Michael Nebrich was precision-like in his execution for the home team going 17-25 for 267 yards and 4 TD's. Sam Ajala was his leading receiver grabbing 4 receptions for 112 yards and 2 TD's (29 & 64 yd TD's).
Rhody QB Bob Bentsen (Warwick) went 18-31 for 151 yards, 1 TD and 2 INT. That one touchdown pass came early in the 4th quarter to Andrew Matos (20yd strike) to pull URI to within 12 at 38-26. However, one of Bentsen's 2 INT's was returned 61 yards for a TD by Fordham's JQ Bowers in the third which opened up a 31-12 lead for the host Rams.
Junior Robbie Delgado (East Providence) had a solid night rushing for 113 yards including a 28-yard TD run.
But the Rams start the season with a loss, their 14th straight dating back to the 2011 season. Rhode Island's last win on the gridiron came against William & Mary on November 5th of 2011.
URI hopes to snap that 14-game skid Saturday, September 7th when they host new CAA member Stony Brook at Meade Stadium at 1pm.
