URI Hammers SMU 72-50

Saturday, December 15, 2012

A 25-10 run midway through the second half lifted the URI Rams over visiting SMU 72-50 Saturday at the Ryan Center.

The trio of Mike Powell (18 pts, 4 assists, 6 steals), Nikola Malesevic (12 points, 5 assists) and Xavier Munford (11 points, 5 assists) keyed the run which expanded Rhode Island's lead from 36-35 just over 4 minutes into the second half to 61-45 with just 6:30 to play.

Powell went 4-5 from the field, 3-3 from three point range and 7-7 from the free throw line.  Andre Malone chiped in with 15 for the Rams.

Rhody did a great job defensively turning the Mustangs over 22 times.  Jalen Jones and Ryan Manuel each scored 14 to lead SMU.

The win lifts Rhode Island's record to (3-7) on the season while SMU falls to (8-2).

The Rams host Georgia State next Saturday at the Ryan Center.

NOTES:

-It was a great day for the Atlantic Ten with newcomer Butler shocking #1 Indiana in overtime 88-86.  That news was tempered by rumors that the Bulldogs may be a primary target of the seven basketball-only schools who announced that they will be leaving the Big East.  Specuation is that Butler, Xavier and Dayton may be the top targets of any new league formed by Providence College, Georgetown, St. John's, Seton Hall, Marquette, DePaul and villanova.

Our best game beginning to end, in years.
Hurley must have taken them to the woodshed after the PC loss.
Lessons seemed to be learned by those he was most critical of.
I think we can win some games, if they can shoot as they did against SMU.
Larry Brown had great words of praise for Hurley and staff.
Said "you guys have everything you need to succeed, and you're in good hands with your program."
