Devon Quigley, URI golf standout

URI graduate Devon Quigley – son of PGA golfer Dana Quigley – was rushed to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach after his BMW became trapped underneath a semi-truck in Riviera Beach, FL on Wednesday night.

The cause of the crash, which occurred at 11:15 pm in front of Lone Pine Estates just north of Canterbury Drive South in the southbound lane, remains unknown. Quigley’s car became trapped after smashing into the truck’s rear.

Quigley – a Rumford, RI native – is still recovering in the hospital, but his condition is unknown.

“He made it through the night and he is fighting,” said Gregg Burke, Deputy Director of Athletics and Head Golf Coach at URI. “He has an indomitable spirit for life.”

Dana Quigley, the victim’s father, is a New England PGA Hall of Famer. He is a six-time Rhode Island Open winner and has become a recent leader on the 2011 Senior PGA Tour. He is a resident of Jupiter, FL – about 12 miles north from the scene of the crash.

The victim, a member of the URI golf team until he graduated in 2007, led his team to the 1st Place Low Net title at the 11th Annual Larry Laoretti and Gary Carter Celebrities Fore Kids Golf Classic on Monday. The tournament – a fundraiser for families who have children with cancer and adults with cancer supporting children under 18 living on Florida’s Treasure Coast – raised over $110,000.

“Devon loves golf … he was very important to the URI team not only because he scored high but because he held the team together,” Burke said. “He is a tremendously gifted young man, and I’m sure that his tenacious spirit will get him through this.”
