URI Hoops Falls To GW, 66-65

Thursday, January 24, 2013

With Wednesday's loss, Dan Hurley's Rams are under .500 (4-5) at the Ryan Center this season.

In a seesaw game that featured 20 lead changes, the University of Rhode Island could not tilt the scoreboard in its favor when it mattered most.

Xavier Munford’s corner 3-pointer rimmed out with two seconds left in regulation, and George Washington escaped the Ryan Center with a 66-65 victory on Wednesday night.

As usual, Munford led the charge for first-year coach Dan Hurley’s Rams, who fell to 6-11 overall and 1-3 in Atlantic 10 action. The junior guard posted 20 points, five assists and four rebounds. Senior forward Nikola Malesevic and senior guard Andre Malone chipped in 16 and 14 points, respectively.

Junior forward Isaiah Armwood paced George Washington with 13 points and freshman guard Joe McDonald added 12, including the go-ahead jumper with nine seconds remaining. The Colonials improved to 9-9 and 3-2 against A-10 foes.

The teams played to a 31-31 tie after one half, the largest separation a pair of four-point leads held by George Washington.

URI opened a 61-56 lead with 5:01 left in the second half, but George Washington responded with a 7-0 run to assume a two-point edge.

A Munford layup with 37 seconds to go put the Rams in front, 65-64, but following a Colonials timeout, McDonald delivered his game-winner on the ensuing possession.

NOTES: Both teams shot at least 50 percent from the field. … URI converted 40 percent (6 of 15) of its 3-point attempts. … George Washington claimed the rebounding battle, 31-23. … The Colonials enjoyed a clear advantage in bench points, with 21 to the Rams’ six. … The Rams are now under .500 (4-5) at the Ryan Center this season. … URI returns to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. contest at Fordham.
