Top High School Athletes recognized by Cox RI Sports Awards

Top high school athletes from across the state were honored at a mega-presentation Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence. The awards were presented for top athlete in both boys and girls sports for all interscholastic sports - fall, winter and spring.
Barrington's Mike Read and North Kingstown High School and Olympic swimmer Elizabeth Beisel. The event was co-hosted by GoLocalProv's Sport Editor Scott Cordischi and Frank Carpano.

In addition, Toronto Maple Leafs and USA Hockey Coach Ron Wilson, a graduate of Providence College, was presented with the Vanguard Award.

Evan Miller, a member of the Lincoln High School swim team, was named the 2010 Special Olympics Athlete of the Year.

The Coach of the Year went to Exeter West Greenwich football coach Mike Messier. Messier led EWG to back-to-back Division IV Super Bowl titles. He was killed in a car accident this winter.
The Central Falls basketball team, which captured its first state championship in 22 years, received the 2010 Team of the Year Award.
