The Thoughts of a New England Sports Fan
Thursday, January 26, 2012
I’m a New England sports fan and I’ve been thinking a lot lately. Here are some of the things I’ve been thinking of:
-I think it’s laughable that a NY Times poll calls Patriots fans “arrogant.”
-Then again, I think that if New York fans had another brain, they’d have one!

-I think that Rob Gronkowski will be not only on the field but productive in Super Bowl XLVI.
-I also think that writing “XLVI” instead of “46” is kind of dumb.
-I think that NY Jets coach Rex Ryan is very entertaining and that Patriots coach Bill Belichick lights up a room when he leaves it.
-I also think that I’d much rather have Belichick as the head coach of my team.
-I think it’s funny how Tom Coughlin’s job seems to be on the line towards the end of the regular season each year.
-I think that the Giants front four on defense is damn good.
-I also remember saying that the Patriots should trade up to draft Jason Pierre Paul in the 2010 NFL draft because he was a freak of an athlete and a stud at South Florida.
-I think that Super Bowl 42 has nothing to do with Super Bowl 46.
-I think that the Giants’ regular season win over the Pats this season is much more meaningful than what happened in Arizona four years ago.
-I think that this whole Tim Thomas skipping the Bruins’ visit to the White House has been blown out of proportion.
-I also think that it is ridiculous for some to suggest that any type of Bruins collapse this year could be directly attributed to Thomas not shaking hands with Barack Obama.
-I think that the Red Sox relative inactivity in free agency this offseason is no big deal.

-I think that Chad Ocho Cinco could actually help the Patriots next Sunday.
-I also think that he has been a major disappointment this year.
-I think it’s obvious that letting Albert Haynesworth go was addition by subtraction.
-I also think that it’s no coincidence that the Patriots got hot and Tampa Bay went in the tank when he switched teams.
-I think that having the Super Bowl in Indianapolis is a horrible idea.
-I also think that holding it anywhere outside of New Orleans is stupid.
-I think that Bill Belichick is second to only Red Auerbach as far as greatest coaches in New England sports history is concerned.
-I think that 98.5 The Sports Hub’s decision to do a 1-hour cross-over with WFAN during the midday Thursday wasn’t such a great idea as it was hard to decipher what all of the hosts were trying to shout at one another.
-I think that Eli Manning and the Giants receivers could abuse the Patriots secondary next week.
-I also think that Tom Brady being on the cover of Sports Illustrated this week is no big deal because I don’t believe in the SI jinx.
-I think that the Patriots run to the Super Bowl in 1985 may have been the franchises most exciting playoff run ever.
-I also think that nothing will ever match the excitement of New England’s Super Bowl 36 upset win over the Rams.
-I think that Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh should have called a timeout so that his kicker would not have been as rushed.
-I also think that Harbaugh is a class act saying that the scoreboard at Gillette Stadium being one down behind had nothing to do with Billy Cundiff missing the game-tying kick.
-I think it’s very sad that it had to end the way that it did for Joe Paterno.
-I also think that Paterno impacted the lives of so many who played for him in a positive manner despite his unfortunate mishandling of the Sandusky situation.
-I think that the Colts and Peyton Manning should part ways before next season.

-I also think that this would be the best thing for both parties.
-I think it would be great if the Miami Dolphins grabbed Manning as it would add more excitement to the AFC East next season.
-I think that I am finished with this column

The problem with Patriot Fans is that they all jumped on the band wagon when Brady came along. I grew up a Giants fan, there were not Patriots and have stayed a Giants fan. When a brash Patriot fan comes up to me I ask them two simple questions.
1. Who was the first Heisman Trophy winner to play for the Pats?
2. What Heisman Trophy Quarterback drafted by the Patriots won two Super Bowls? If they can't answer that then they are band wagon fans.

John,
Those are two idiotic questions to test the loyalty of a Patriots fan. I started following football around 1972 -73. Just because I'm not as much of a history buff as you, or as old as you, doesn't make me any less of a fan.
I have no idea who the first Heisman trophy winner was, nor do I care.
I'm guessing the second question answer would be Jim Plunkett.
