Smithfield captured their third straight DIII lacrosse title on Sunday.

Smithfield powered its way past Coventry 10-4 Sunday afternoon to secure their third straight Division III boys lacrosse state championship. With the win, the Sentinels improved their overall record to 45-0 over the past three seasons.

Having only five players who played significant minutes on Smithfield's 2012 state championship team didn't seem to bother the play of the Sentinels on Sunday. With mostly a new cast, Smithfield found a way to have a balanced scoring attack, with six different Sentinels combining for 10 goals to clinch the victory for Smithfield. Bryan Kortick led the way for the Sentinels, scoring two goals and dishing out two assists, while James Whitehead, Nick Gerlach, and Lou Catarina each scored two goals of their own. Brendan Benoit and Matt Walker also chipped in with one goal apiece in Smithfield's winning effort.

Smithfield gained an early 3-0 advantage in the first quarter and led for the entire game. Coventry cut their deficit to two goals, with Smithfield taking a slim 4-2 lead into the half. However, Smithfield came out in the second half and ruined Coventry's hopes of getting back into the game, with two quick goals to open the half by Whitehead and Kortick, extending the Smithfield lead to 6-2.
