Sergio Garcia

When will people learn?

Sergio Garcia is the latest dope to open his mouth and insert his soft-spiked foot.

Two weeks after his verbal spat with Tiger Woods at The Players Championship, Garcia made a racially insensitive comment directed at Woods at a European Tour players dinner Tuesday night.

When asked if he would be having Woods over for dinner before the US Open, Garcia responded, “we’ll have him around every night. We will serve fried chicken.”

Hello Fuzzy Zoeller!

Do I believe that Garcia is a flat-out racist who does not like black people? Probably not. But he is guilty of flat out stupidity for which he has since apologized.

Woods, for his part, tweeted, "I'm confident that there is real regret that the remark was made. The Players ended nearly two weeks ago and it's long past time to move on and talk about golf."

It’s bad enough that Garcia has made headlines for his uncanny ability to collapse down the stretch in big events like The Players Championship and for being known as one of the “best players to have never won a major.” Now he will be remembered for his unfortunate and insensitive remarks.

-All of you NFL fans out there who love watching the draft each April, get ready for a major change. Starting next year, the NFL Draft will now be held in the middle of May. While dates for free agency and the scouting combine have not yet been altered, rumor is that they could be changing as well.

-And while we’re on the subject of the NFL, the league is apparently mulling over the idea of shortening the preseason to two games and either expanding the regular season from 16 to 18 games or expanding the playoffs.

-One more NFL note, Super Bowl L (as in 50) has been awarded to San Francisco while Super Bowl LI (51) was given to Houston. Some are complaining that going back to Houston is not a good idea because the city is so spread out and lacked that Super Bowl feel leading up to the game back in Super Bowl 38. Having attended that Super Bowl, I would agree with those sentiments but also feel that other cities experience similar problems. Only New Orleans is compact enough with a central meeting spot like Bourbon Street to have that true Super Bowl build-up leading into the game.

-Is there any doubt that the loudest ovation at Fenway Park Thursday night will not be for any member of the Red Sox but, instead, for former Red Sox and current Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona?

-Just a couple of years removed from a Stanley Cup Finals loss to the Boston Bruins, the Vancouver Canucks have fired head coach Alain Vigneault. And in a related note, my brother in Sweden informs me that the Sedin brothers (or sisters as they were called in these parts a few years ago) went back to their home country and helped them win gold in the World Championships. It’s not surprising that they would excel in those games because the European style of hockey is more about speed and skill and less about physical play as the NHL’s Stanley Cup Playoffs are. That’s probably why a guy like Tyler Seguin continues to struggle this postseason.

-A couple of PC notes. Former Friar James Still who is serving 3 years at the ACI for assault was allegedly hurt badly in a prison fight and was supposedly sent to Rhode Island Hospital with broken bones and other injuries.

-Also, with the NBA Draft a little more than a month away, many of the mock drafts do not include Ricky Ledo’s name in the first round. If Ledo does not get drafted in the opening round, it would appear that his decision to leave Providence College without ever playing a game there would be a bad one. There were rumors circulating about a month ago that the Cleveland Cavaliers had an interest in Ledo. However, the Cavs hold the top overall pick and will surely not use that on Ledo. They do also have the 19th pick in the first round. I suppose that it is possible that they could take a flier on Ledo there. We shall see.

-For those wondering how Brown basketball sophomore Joe Sharkey is doing following his assault over a week ago, there are positive signs each day. Joe’s sister – Samantha – has been doing a wonderful job of giving daily updates on Joe’s progress and the hundreds of people who have visited him in the hospital. While Joe still has a long ways to go, the hope here is that he will continue to take positive steps forward each day.  You can see Samantha's heart warming daily updates on Joe right here.

-The spin on Rob Gronkowski’s latest forearm surgery is that things went very well. As far as I’m concerned, things will be “going well” when Gronk no longer requires surgery on the arm which he has had four times already.

-If Jacoby Ellsbury is hoping to strike it rich in free agency this offseason, he had better start playing a heck of a lot better than he is right now.

-His minutes on the ice may be limited, but how can you not love what Shawn Thornton brings to the table night in and night out? His physical presence, not to mention the production of his 4th line, is a huge asset for the Bruins.

-Sweden’s Henrik Lundqvist was getting all of the pub heading into the series, but it has been Finnish phenom Tuukka Rask who has stolen the show between the pipes thus far.

-If, as expected, the B’s do close out the Rangers at some point, the Pittsburgh Penguins will be a very difficult match-up.

-Are Torey Krug and Matt Bartkowski that important to the Providence Bruins? Apparently so! The P-Bruins blew a 3-0 series lead in their AHL playoff series against Scranton-Wilkes Barre and lost in game 7 Wednesday night 5-0. Ouch!

-Am I the only one who had to play “Words With Friends” to realize that “QI,” “ZA” and “AA” are all words?

-While celebrating the unofficial start of summer this weekend with barbecue’s and other activities, take time to remember the men and women who died while seving this country in the United States Armed Forces. After all, that is what Memorial Day is all about.
