Scott Cordischi On Sports: Belichick Dumb As A Fox!

So what exactly are the Patriots doing? I would say that your guess is as good as mine, but I think I have an idea what “The Genius” is up to.

Bill Belichick may be a lot of things, but stupid is not one of them. And I think that he realizes that his window of opportunity to win a Super Bowl with Tom Brady is closing. That is why he appears to be going for broke this year.

Not that Belichick is jeopardizing the long term future of the organization b y doing so. That is something that he most certainly would never do.

Given the stability of the Patriots organization from ownership to management, coaches and players, they were considered to be one of the teams favored to do well coming out of a lockout-shortened offseason. And that probably was and is a solid assessment.

But Belichick and company has made a big splash this offseason by bringing in big-name free agents like Albert Haynesworth, Chad Ocho Cinco and Shaun Ellis. He has also signed virtually every defensive lineman with a heartbeat. Those aren’t the moves of a coach thinking about 3 or 4 years from now. Those are moves by a man concerned with winning now.

Belichick can downplay the fact that he is switching his base defense from the 3-4 to the 4-3, but that is exactly what he appears to be doing. And why not? His defense was dreadful last year, particularly on third down, so why not make a drastic change?

Winning a Super Bowl is very difficult and it is quite possible that New England will not win another one with Tom Brady quarterbacking the team. But it won’t be for a lack of effort on the part of Bill Belichick. He is showing us that he will go to virtually any lengths to try to win another one now.

-The Patriots are one of the odds-on favorites to win Super Bowl 46. According to Bodog.com, the Pats are 8:1 to win it all this season just behind defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay who is 7:1. Pittsburgh is 10:1, followed by San Diego at 12:1 and Indianapolis, New Orleans and Baltimore all at 14:1.

-Regardless of whether or not the Red Sox want to give David Ortiz a new contract, some team in baseball will give him the years and the cash that he is looking for this offseason. And don’t be surprised if it isn’t the NY Yankees who are in the market for a designated hitter.

-I made a bet with a Yankees fan named John before the start of the season saying that AJ Burnett would not win more than 15 games this year. On June 29th, Burnett won his 8th game and I appeared to be dead in the water. Now here we are in mid August and Burnett has since gone 0-3 with 4 no-decisions in his last 7 starts and I’m looking great. Go figure.

-Chad Ocho Cinco can live with this Patriots fan for as long as he wants as long as he doesn’t mind pitching in around the house once in a while. You know, like mowing the lawn, taking care of the kids, cooking dinner, that type of stuff. Or I’ll simply take the cash instead.

-I never was one to root for Tiger Woods but the actions of his former caddie Stevie Williams have made me rethink my stance on that. Part of me would love to see Woods dominate again just to shut Williams’ loud mouth up!

-Is WEEI's Michael Holley still bragging about being from “THE” Ohio State University?

-Don’t expect to see a whole lot of Tom Brady Thursday night against the Jaguars.

-I just returned from a “moose expedition” in North Conway, NH with my son Jack. We saw a black bear, a deer, two fox and a coyote but no moose! Maybe they should rename it the “everything but a moose expedition.”
