Brown Stays Hot, Earn Big 79-76 Win Over Sacred Heart

The Brown Bears men's basketball team (7-6) defeated the (6-6) Sacred Heart Pioneers 79-76 on Sunday afternoon at the Pizzitola Center. Brown has now won four straight games and six of their last seven.

Sacred Heart's Cane Broome knocked down a three-pointer to tie the game at 72 with 50 seconds left in the game. After a Sacred Heart time out, Brown's Tavon Blackmon took the ball hard to the basket and laid it in to put the Bears up 74-72 with 32 seconds left. Sacred Heart would hang around in the last thirty seconds but Blackmon and Steven Spieth would knock down clutch free throws and put the game away.

The Bears were led by sophomore Leland King who netted 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds  in 21 minutes of action. Steven Spieth, Rafael Maia and Tavon Blackmon all followed up  with 13 points in the contest. Blackmon also added eight assists and three steals for the Bears. 

The Pioneers were led by Cane Broome who led all scorers with 23 points in the game. Broome also added five rebounds, four assists, two blocks and three steals in the loss.

Brown returns to action on Wednesday, December 31 when they travel to Kingston to take on the instate rival URI Rams. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.

Cedric Kuakumensah

Cedric Kuakumensah was once again a defensive presence in the middle for the Bears, recording three blocks and a steal in 22 minutes of play. 

Kuakumensah also had nine points on 3 of 8 shooting, including 2 of 3 from three-point land, and pulled down seven rebounds. 

All of his rebounds came in the second half.

Rafael Maia

Senior Rafael Maia had a very productive game for Brown against Sacred Heart, both defensively and offensively. 

Maia netted 13 points on 6 of 8 shooting from the field and contributed two assists. Maia pulled down nine rebounds, three of them coming on the offensive glass, and also came away with three steals. 

A solid performance for Rafael Maia, one of his best games of the season, and it's coming at a great time for Brown.

Leland King

Sophomore Leland King continues to play well for the Brown Bears and led them in this game. 

King netted 19 points on 9 of 14 shooting from the field and 1 of 4 from three-point land. King also had two steals and fell one rebound shy of a double-double as he grabbed nine rebounds in the game. 

The only think Leland King didn't do in this game was get to the free throw line, he did not shoot one free throw in the game.

Tavon Blackmon

With 32 seconds left in the game, Tavon Blackmon took the ball hard to the basket and laid it in  to give the Bears a 74-72 lead. Brown would not trail, nor would the game be tied again after that. 

Blackmon had a tremendous game for the Bears, netting 13 points, dishing out eight assists and grabbing three rebounds and registering three steals. 

Blackmon was only 3 for 8 from the field but knocked down 7 of his 8 free throws helping to seal the Brown victory.

Solid win

This was a solid home win for the Bears against a Sacred Heart team with very good guard play. 

The Bears were up by 11 with six minutes and 30 seconds left in th first half but Sacred Heart went on a run to end the half only down three at 40-37. 

In the second half, Brown trailed by five  with ten minutes to go but battled back and were able to grind out a nice win. 

The Brown Bears are red hot right now having won four straight and 6 of their last 7 games.
