RI Legends To Be Honored at Brown-URI Game

It may be the smallest state in the country, but Rhode Island does not lack great athletes.  Over the years many from the Ocean State have gone on to accomplish great things in the sports world which has, in turn, made this state very proud.  On Saturday, October 5th, many of these great athletes will gather on the field at Brown Stadium for the Brown-URI football game under the lights.  They will be honored as part of a halftime ceremony on the field in front of what everyone hopes will be a big crowd.  Here is the official press release from Brown University on the event:

Providence, R.I. - Bringing together the legends of Rhode Island sports for an evening of celebration, Brown Athletics will host Rhode Island Legends Day at Brown Stadium on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at Brown’s football game against URI. The Governor’s Cup football game between the Bears and Rams will kickoff at 6:00 p.m.

Ernie DiGregorio is one of the many Rhode Island greats that will be on hand at Brown Stadium October 5th.

Among the Ocean State sports legends already committed to the weekend’s events are:

Major League baseball and Brown standout Bill Almon ‘75 (Warwick); Oakland Raiders runningback and Super Bowl Champion Mark van Eeghen (Cranston); Hobey Baker winner and NHL standout David Emma (Cranston); PGA Tour Champion and CVS Charity Classic founder Brad Faxon (Barrington); Olympic gold medalist and Providence College standout Sara DeCosta-Hayes (Warwick); Providence College NCAA Final Four guard and NBA Rookie of the Year Ernie DiGregorio (North Providence); amateur golfing great and RI Hall of Fame member Nancy Chaffee (Barrington); LPGA standout and former NCAA Division I Champion Anna Grzebien (Narragansett); Providence College and NBA standout Joe Hassett (Providence); and Providence College Head Men’s Basketball Coach Ed Cooley (Providence).

“Brown University is excited to recognize the outstanding athletic accomplishments of many Rhode Islanders,” said Brown Director of Athletics Jack Hayes. “These individuals have instilled great pride in our state through all that they have achieved and we appreciate the opportunity to celebrate their success.”

The day starts with a tailgate reception for all of the legends under the big tent in the Brown Stadium parking lot, prior to the football game. Brown’s pre-game radio show on WPRV-AM 790, with Scott Cordischi hosting, will emanate from the tent and will feature live interviews with many of the legends in attendance. In addition, all of the sports legends will be recognized on the field at halftime of the game.
