Providence College: Former Friar Brandon Austin in Trouble Again

Tuesday, May 06, 2014

Providence College parted ways with troubled freshman basketball player Brandon Austin in January following a confusing suspension dating back to ealy November.

Brandon Austin

4 months later, he's in trouble again, and his future with the University of Oregon is in doubt.

Austin and 2 of his Oregon teammates were named in a police report released Monday evening by the Eugene Police Department.  Teammate Damyean Dotson is the suspect identified in the report detailing a sexual assault case from March.

The District Attorney's office dismissed the case on April 14th, concluding that while the incidents occurred, the victim's inconsistent testimony was not reliable enough to prove anything in criminal court. Dotson, Austin, and teammate Dominic Artis are not currently participating in team activities with the Ducks.

It's the second sexual assault case Austin has been linked to.  The first led to his season-long suspension from the Friars last season and ultimately led him to leave the program.  The end result of this case has yet to unfold.

Austin never played a regular season game for the Friars and has yet to appear in a game for Oregon.  He was a National Top 50 recruit in the Class of 2013.

Where's there's smoke (twice), there's fire. Obviously, PC knew there was plenty of smoke when they let Austin go. Good for them.
Makes you question why PPD didn't pursue criminal charges against him?

I think this marks the first time GoLocal has directly referenced the reason for the suspension. I guess now that this kid is no longer enrolled we feel safe - quoting it. Even after WSJ dropped the news on the eve of the tourney - it was all still spoken around not to.

My ? is that if we think that this legitimizes the first incident in terms of "cause" does that mean we're going to use the terminology above when referencing the matching suspension for the other Frosh? Or will that just and still be spoken around?
