NHL Picks Las Vegas for League’s Next Expansion Team

The National Hockey League (NHL) has chosen Las Vegas as the site of  its next expansion team, provided that organizers and afford a $500 million fee.

The NHL's board of governors is set to hold a formal vote during a June 22 meeting in witch two-thirds of the board needs to approve the recommendation. 

The new team in Las Vegas would be the 31st in the league and the 15th in the NHL's Western Conference. The team would also be the first major sports franchise in Las Vegas.

The new team would not start until the 2017-18 season at the earliest. 

Quebec City was also in the running for an NHL team. 

Previous NHL Expansion 

he last NHL expansion took place in 2000 when teams were put in Minnesota and Columbus. 

According to Forbes, Minnesota is valued at $380 million while Columbus is valued at $226 million. 

Both of those teams paid $80 million to join the league.
