The hits keep coming for the Rhody Rams. Jim Baron has had to deal with quite a bit of adversity this season with injuries, suspensions, academic issues and players being dismissed from the team. This, while he tries to develop a young team.

Before Saturday’s game at Charlotte, Nikola Malesevic was suspended indefinitely for violating of team rules. This isn’t the first time Malesevic has been disciplined by his head coach. Earlier this season, Baron told the junior to go to the locker room for the second half of their game against Cleveland State after he was openly pouting on the bench after being pulled from the game.  Malesevic also broke his hand while punching a wall following a loss to Yale and missed significant time as a result of that injury.

With this as the backdrop, Rhody lost the game 73-66.

Billy Baron led URI in scoring once again with 24 points. Orion Outerbridge was the only other Rams player in double figure with 14.

Rhode Island’s shooting woes continued Saturday as the Rams connected on just 23 of their 65 field goal attempts (35%). Meanwhile, Charlotte shot 48% connecting on 24 of their 50 shot attempts.

The Rams did outrebound the 49ers 44-35, but Charlotte spent a lot more time at the free throw line shooting 38 free throws to URI’s 20.

Javarris Barnett led the 49ers with 18 points.

The loss drops URI to (5-21) on the season. The Rams are (2-9) and in last place in the Atlantic Ten.

Rhody hosts St. Joe’s Wednesday night at the Ryan Center for their 6th annual Pink Out Game to benefit the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. Game time is 7pm.
