It was the match-up of the week in the Ivy League. Brown and Yale met at the Yale Bowl in New Haven, Connecticut knowing that the winner would remain in the race for the league title while the loser was essentially finished. After 60 minutes of football, the Bears were still standing while the Bulldogs were left to wonder what could have been. Brown won 34-28 handing Yale their first home loss in 4 games this season.

Senior tailback Mark Kachmer had a record-setting day for the Bears rushing for a career-high 192 yards on 19 carries and two touchdowns. He also had 3 receptions for 21 yards and a touchdown. That’s 213 yards of total offense and three touchdowns.

Kachmer got it going early on the Bears’ opening drive. Starting at their own 1-yard line, Brown handed it to Kachmer who rumbled for 4 yards to the 5. Two plays later on 3rd and 6, he took the handoff from senior QB Kyle Newhall-Caballero and scampered 95 yards down the sideline to give Brown a 7-0 lead.

The 95-yard run was not only the longest run by any player in Brown football history, it was also the longest play from scrimmage (run or pass) in the history of the program. Former RI Supreme Court Justice Bob Flanders held the previous mark running for a 94-yard touchdown back in 1968. Ironically, Flanders also did it at the Yale Bowl against the Elis.

Brown built a 20-7 halftime lead thanks to Kachmer’s long run and TD passes from Newhall-Caballero (22-41 for 224 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT) to Jimmy Saros (6 rec. 84 yards 1 TD) and Jonah Fay.

Kachmer’s second TD run from 1-yard out midway through the third quarter gave Brown a 27-7 lead before Yale answered with a TD pass from Patrick Witt (34-46 for 370 yards, 2 TD, 3 INT) to Jackson Liguori (5 rec. 58 yards 1 TD) to cut it to 27-14.

Then Kachmer would haul in a 2-yard TD pass from Newhall-Caballero with 8:55 to play putting the Bears back up by 20, 34-14.

Yale scored a couple of late TD’s against the Brown defense but the Bears were able to hang on for the win in a game that was not as close as the final score may have indicated.

The Brown defense, which has had a sensational season, made big play after big play once again. Seniors Matt O’Donnell and Steve Peyton each had interceptions as did junior first team all-Ivy cornerback A.J. Cruz.

The Bears also held Yale’s rushing attack to a grand total of just 7 yards rushing on 24 carries. That total included 3 sacks of Witt who was pressured by the Brown defense for most of the afternoon.

With the win, Brown improves to a league-best (7-1) overall mark. They are (4-1) in the Ivy League. Yale falls to (4-4) on the season. The Bulldogs are now (3-2) in league play.

It will be senior day at Brown next Saturday when the Bears host Dartmouth. The Big Green (3-5 overall, 2-3 Ivy) defeated Cornell 33-24 in Hanover, NH on Saturday.
