Dan Hurley signs contract extension with URI

URI and basketball head coach Dan Hurley have agreed on a contract extension through the 2023-2024 season, the school announced on Tuesday.

With the extension, Hurley's total compensation will increase to $1.1 million.

Hurley's previous contract extension guaranteed him $1 million per year starting in 2017-18.

With this new extension, Hurley will receive an additional $50,000 for fiscal year 2018 and another $50,000 for fiscal year 2019, related to speaking engagements and appearances.

Hurley's total compensation for fiscal year 2018 will be 1,050,000 and in fiscal year 2019 and beyond, his compensation will total $1,100,000.

This is Hurley's fourth contract extension in his five years at Rhode Island.

My family and I are proud to call Rhode Island our home and look forward to the years ahead," said Hurley in a statement.

This extension comes after Hurley led the Rams to their first A-10 Championship since 1999 and their first NCAA Tournament appearance since the same season.

The Rams beat Creighton in the first round of the tournament before falling to Oregon in the second round. The win over Creighton was URI's first NCAA Tournament win since 1998.

Dan's leadership and commitment to our student-athletes has now firmly established our men's basketball program as one of the top in the Atlantic 10 conference. We look forward to next season and continuing to build on the momentum that Dan, his coaching staff, and our student-athletes have developed over the past few years," said URI President David Dooley.

Previous Extensions

Hurley’s last extension came in May of 2016 following rumors that he might leave for the Rutgers job.

The contract, kept him at Rhode Island through the 2021-22 season and made him one of eight A-10 coaches to make at least $1 million.

Prior to the 2016 extension, Hurley made $630,000 during the 2014-15 season and was one of the four lowest paid coaches in the conference.

Rams in 2017-18

This upcoming season, the Rams return senior guards E.C. Matthews, Jarvis Garrett, Jared Terrell and Stanford Robinson, as well as, sophomore guard Jeff Dowtin.

URI also adds junior college forward Ryan Preston, forward Mike Layssard and center Michael Tertsea, who redshirted last season. Forwards Cyril Langevine and Andre Berry will also have a significant role in the front court this season.
