Hurley, URI Snares Another Top Recruit

Sunday, September 23, 2012

Ed Cooley wowed Friar fans with his ability to recruit top talent to PC in his first year on the job, now Dan Hurley is doing the same at the University of Rhode Island.

One day after landing a top 100 recruit in Michigan's E.C. Mathews, Hurley and the Rams bagged another top player in the class of 2013 by getting 6'-7" forward Hassan Martin from his old stomping grounds of Staten Island, NY.

Like they did with Mathews, Rhody beat out Providence College for Martin's services.  Other schools involved with him were Dayton, St. Joe's and UMass from the A-10 and Iowa State from the Big 12.

While Martin isn't rated quite as high as Mathews, the combo forward is in Rivals top 150 for the class of 2013.  Still, his addition has excited Ram fans.  One URI basketball fan said on facebook, "greatest weekend in URI basketball history!  Hurley rules!"

Hurley appears to be following the same blueprint that led to his success at Wagner where he turned over the Seahawks roster quickly which translated into great success in only his second season at the school.  That success ultimately landed him the job at URI.

Hurley and company are amazing.
Real world guys with a determination and a plan to succeed.
They never met the big Nigerain kid, by way of Virginia, until last week, They had him on campus and enrolled the day after. That just never happens!
Reading the quotes of the players who committed, as well as their coaches, told a story of real trust for Hurley and a want to play for him and the rest of the staff.
One more committment, and recruiting could be wrapped up before Midnight Madness!
Just a great job breathing life into a comatose program.
The BUZZ is back in Kingston for the first time since 1999!

Rod:

No doubt Hurley is a mover and a shaker and he's not going to take a back seat to anyone. That was his personality as a player. He was a scrapper. Hassan Martin's coach also had great things to say about him and his staff in my latest story.
