History To Be Made at 2010 CVS Caremark Charity Classic?

Tuesday, June 29, 2010

The heat was on at Rhode Island Country Club Monday for the start of the 2010 CVS Caremark Charity Classic.  The sun was shining while temperatures climbed into the mid 90’s providing a perfect back drop for the 20 PGA, LPGA and Champions Tour players on hand.

With the tees up on the first hole, the distance was playing at 397 yards down hill.  Big hitters like JB Holmes and Bubba Watson came close to driving the green.  Watson can be excused for not making it having likely celebrated his first career PGA Tour win Sunday night after winning a 3-way playoff at the Traveler’s in Cromwell, Connecticut.

Watson and his partner Camilo Villegas are among five teams who recorded a best-ball score of 8-under par 63 in round one.  They all trail the teams of Juli Inkster/Boo Weekley and Suzann Petterson/Hunter Mahan who finished the round at 10-under par 61.

If you are a fan of watching history in the making, then you may want to stop by today's final round of the tournament which tees off at 9am.

LPGA Tour players have been coming to this event for a few years now but have never been a part of a winning team.  Might this be the year?

Tournament co-hosts Brad Faxon and Billy Andrade have also never won their own tournament but find themselves in the third place log jam at 8-under.  Faxon and his partner Rickie Fowler both played well Monday as did Andrade and Bill Haas who “ham and egged” their way to 8-under according to Andrade.

Local golfer Brett Quigley has also come close but never won the event.  He and playing partner Angela Stanford also find themselves at 8-under heading into today’s final round.

So it looks like we could have a first when all is said and done this afternoon.  Will Faxon or Andrade finally prove to be a less than hospitable host?  Will Brett Quigley take home the trophy without his usual partner and uncle Dana?  Or will an LPGA player be in the winner’s circle for the first time?

The second and final round of the CVS Caremark Charity Classic should be full of drama this morning at Rhode Island Country Club.
