Hendricken, Mount Win on Day 2 of Holiday Face-Off Tournament

Saturday, December 28, 2013

Hendricken will play for the title tomorrow on Day 3 of the prestigious Holiday Face-Off Tournament at Adelard Arena. The Hawks knocked off fellow Rhode Island representative La Salle Academy Friday in a 7-3 contest. Host Mount St. Charles also was victorious Friday, defeating La Salle College (PA) 3-1 in the consolation bracket.

Day 2 began with a consolation game between Fairfield Prep (CT) and Franklin High School (MA), with Fairfield exploding for 7 goals in a 7-2 win.

The next game pitted host Mount St. Charles against La Salle College, with the Mounties bouncing back from Thursday's 2 overtime, 2 shootout loss and prevailing 3-1.  Keith Phaneuf scored twice for Mount and Brian Larence was solid again between the pipes in the victory.

The third game saw Rhody rivals Bishop Hendricken and La Salle face off just 6 days after their 2-2 tie in RIIL play last weekend.  Friday's game was a different story however, with Hendricken scoring 4 1st period goals and cruising to a 7-3 victory.  Reilly Miller netted a hat trick in the win for the Hawks, who advance to the Championship game on Saturday night.

The nightcapper saw St. Joseph's (NY) blank Bishop Guertin (NH) 4-0 and punch their ticket to the final as well.  St. Joseph's and Hendricken will meet at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Championship game.  La Salle Academy plays Guertin at 4 p.m. in the 3rd place game, with Mount playing Fairfield at 2 p.m. in a consolation game.  La Salle College and Frankiln High School open things up at noon Saturday in their consolation matchup.

Friday's games may not have matched the drama of Thursday's openers, but it was still a great day for Rhode Island hockey.  For the second straight day 2 out of the 3 RI teams skated to victory.  To give you a feel for the competitiveness of this tournament, consider Hendricken beat Fairfield Thursday on a last second goal and St. Joseph's beat Mount St. Charles after 2 overtimes and 2 shootouts.  The losers of those games square off in a consolation game tomorrow, but the victors are set to play for the title.

The updated bracket is posted to the right.  Remember that all 8 teams are playing Saturday, with La Salle College and Franklin HS matching up in the consolation bracket, and La Salle Academy meeting Bishop Guertin in the 3rd place game.

North Kingstown

Division Record: 3-1 (Division 2 South)

Overall Record: 3-1-1

North Kingstown beat Toll Gate 4-1 last Friday, but then fell 5-0 on Saturday against Cumberland.  The Skippers are still in the hunt in Division 2 but the lopsided loss to the Clippers tells me they aren't an elite Division 2 team yet.

Burrilville

Divison Record: 1-1-2 (Division 1 Eccleston)

Overall Record: 1-1-2

Burrillville lost to Coventry on Saturday, but it's the Broncos 3-1 victory over La Salle on Friday night that has them earning a spot in this week's Power Pack.  Burrillville hasn't been as consistent as you'd like to see, but beating the Rams shows the Broncos are capable of beating anyone when they're clicking on all cylinders.

La Salle

Divison Record: 1-2-1 (Division 1 Cimini)

Overall Record: 2-2-1

La Salle definitely didn't bring their A game against Burrillville on Friday, but the Rams showed some heart in tying Hendricken 2-2 the very next night. La Salle also won their opening round game of the Holiday Face-Off Tournament over Franklin High School.  At 2-2-1 the record isn't great, but it's going to take a lot to drop La Salle (or any of the Cimini division teams for that matter) out of my Top 3.
