Hassan Martin is 1st URI Player to Win A-10 Defensive Player of the Year

URI forward Hassan Martin has been named the 201516 A-10 Defensive Player of the Year. Martin is the first URI Ram to win the Defensive Player of the Year Award since it's inception in 1996-97.
Martin was also named to the A-10's five player all defensive team for the second straight season.

GET THE LATEST BREAKING NEWS HERE -- SIGN UP FOR GOLOCAL FREE DAILY EBLASTMartin averaged 2.5 blocks per game overall this season and 2. 4 in conference play, putting him atop the league leaders for the third straight season. The 2.5 blocks per game is 18th best in the country.
Martin finished his season with 65 blocked shots, ranking him sixth in program history for most blocks in a season.
Earlier in the season, Martin moved into the #2 spot on Rhode Island's all-time blocked shots list, passing current assistant coach Antonio Reynolds Dean.
Martin now has 248 career blocked shots, 10th most among active NCAA division 1 players and second among active juniors.
Martin has missed the last three games and will not play in the A-10 tournament due to a knee injury.

The URI Rams enter the A-10 Tournament as a 7 seed and will face UMass on Thursday, March 10 at 6:30 p.m. The game can be seen on NBC Sports Network.
