One if by land, two if by sea? Seems that it was the other way around Saturday on Rhode Island gridirons.
Paul Canevari rushed for 173 yards and three touchdowns as Bryant defeated Wagner 47-28 Saturday in Smithfield, while Justin Semmes rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns for Rhode Island as the Rams cruised to a 42-7 victory against Central Connecticut State University in Kingston.
Semmes rushed 18 times and picked up the first touchdown of the game and another in the third quarter for the Rams (2-3). Bob Bentsen threw a pair of touchdown passes in the first two quarters to make the score 21-0 at the half. He completed 11 of 20 passes for 168 yards. CCSU's Andrew Clements threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Matt Braddock in the fourth quarter, spoiling a URI shutout attempt with about 10 minutes to play.
Bryant (3-1, 1-0 Northeast Conference) jumped out to a 17-0 lead midway through the second quarter and never looked back. Canevari scored on runs of 1, 8 and 11 yards to pace the Bulldogs. Wagner scored twice in the second quarter to pull within 27-14, but Bryant defensive back Michael Johnson picked up a fumble and raced 78 yards for a touchdown, and the Bulldog defense picked up interceptions on the next two Seahawks' drives to put it away.
Bryant will next play at Stony Brook, while URI plays in the Governors' Cup match at Brown - both games are next Saturday, October 5th.
