GoLocalProv Announces Summer Olympic Coverage - Contributors to Report from London

GoLocal24 announced that it is partnering with Boston University to provide coverage for the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Graduate student Justin Bourke and graduating senior Brittany Devane will be representing GoLocal from London, England, as part of a group of fourteen students selected by the University’s College of Communications to report for local news outlets around New England.

“We’re excited to bring Olympic stories that have local angles to Massachusetts and Rhode Island residents,” says GoLocal24 CEO Josh Fenton “This will be more than just finish line coverage. We want to bring the passion of the Olympics back to our viewers and readers, exposing them to the athletes, teams, and events that are relevant in our communities.”

“This initiative is designed to go beyond the network broadcasts and AP-style coverage. The stories will focus on the sacrifices families make to help their children become Olympians. It is about the athlete from our area who is now competing on the ultimate global stage,” said Bourke, who will be focused on Rhode Island coverage.

Bourke and Devane will be writing, tweeting, and producing video reports for GoLocal’s Providence and Worcester locations. This will include regular content leading up to the Olympics, as well as around-the-clock coverage during the games, which begin on July 27. The two will be stationed at Boston University’s satellite campus in Kensington, in the heart of London.

"Consider this Olympic-level training for the online journalists of tomorrow. Our BU students will navigate an international news and sports event, and collaborate with each other to blog, videotape, photograph Olympic stories – posting to the Web sites of New England TV, online, radio and newspaper outlets,” says Susan Walker, Program Director and Journalism Professor at Boston University. “Viewers will get beyond the network, finish line coverage of their favorite local Olympians, watching when and what they want online."

The games begin with the opening ceremony on July 27 and continue until August 12.

GoLocal’s coverage begins in June, 2012.
