Friars Improve to (9-1) With 91-64 Win Over Brown

In the world of sports there’s something known as a “trap” game. It’s a game that falls directly between two “big” games on a team’s schedule. Last night, the PC Friars played one of those games and, for a half, it looked like they might fall victim to the trap. However, in the end, the Friars prevailed beating the Brown Bears 91-64.
Providence (9-1) had just defeated intra state rival URI at the Dunk Saturday and with a trip to Boston College to take on the ACC’s Eagles on Wednesday, you wondered if they weren’t ripe for the picking Monday night.
Brown played very well in the first half shooting 54% (13-24) from the field and 46% (6-13) from three. The Bears led by as many as 8 when freshman Sean McGonagill (12 pts, 5 assists) hit a lay-up with 3:54 to go in the half to put Brown up 31-23.

Providence took control of the game immediately to start the second half. A 30-10 run in the first 10 minutes of the second half doused the upset hopes of the Bears dropping Brown to (4-4) on the season.
There were a few career-highs set in Monday night’s game. Friars senior Marshon Brooks lead all scorers with a career best 33 points. His sophomore point guard Vincent Council had an impressive double-double with 19 points and 16 assists. Councils 16 dimes tie the all-time single game high in Providence College men’s basketball history. Vin Ernst dished out 16 assists in a single game twice in his career. Carlton Screen also did it once.
For Brown, senior forward Garrett Leffelman scored a career-best 22 points while freshman Dockery Walker (8 pts) and Josh Biber (3 pts) also registered career highs.
The Friars return to play tomorrow night in Chestnut Hill against the Boston College Eagles. The Bears are off for the next 15 days for exams. Brown will host Army December 21st at the Pizzatola Sports Center.
