Former RI Schoolboys in Major and College Baseball

There are only five former Rhode Island high school baseball players on the rosters of Major League Baseball teams.

Davey Lopes:

Born 5/3/45 in East Providence and went to Washburn University. He’s currently the first base coach with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Rocco Baldelli:

Born 9/25/81 in Woonsocket. He was an outfielder and drafted by Tampa Bay right out of Bishop Hendricken High in Warwick. He made his Major League debut in 2003. He’s currently a special instructor with the Rays.

Baseball

Chris Iannetta:

Born 4/8/83 in Providence. He was an All-State catcher at St. Raphael Academy in Pawtucket. He then played at the University of North Carolina. He was drafter by the Colorado Rockies and made his Major League debut in 2006.

Dan Wheeler:

Born 12/10/77 in Warwick. He played at Pilgrim High in Warwick. He’s a pitcher with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Paul Konerko:

Born 3/5/76 in Providence. He made his Major League debut in 1997 with the Los Angeles Dodgers and now plays first baseman for the Chicago White Sox.

There are quite a few former RI schoolboy stars playing college baseball today. Here is a brief list of five:

Anthony Mao (Born: 2/19/90-6-1, 180) He’s a sophomore pitcher (R) and former All-Stater at Cranston West. Mao (6-1, 180) is at Coastal Carolina University.

Jackson Geary (Born: 4/7/90-6-1, 190) He’s a freshman pitcher (R) at Coastal Carolina University. He is a former All-Stater at South Kingstown High.

Jeff Cammans (Born: 11/15/88-6-0, 182) He’s a junior outfielder at the University of Rhode Island. He is a Jamestown resident who starred at North Kingstown High.

Dan Gamache (Born: 11/20/90-6-0, 196) He’s a sophomore infielder at Auburn University. He lives in Exeter and was an All-Stater at Bishop Hendricken High.

Chris Pickering (Born: 2/21/89-6-2, 209) He’s a junior pitcher (L) at the University of Rhode Island who played at Lincoln High School
