Fordham Pulls Out Late Win Over URI

Sunday, January 27, 2013

In a closely contested game at Rose Hill Gym in the Bronx, the Fordham Rams slipped past the Rhody Rams 66-63 Saturday in A-10 play.

Rhody looked like it might escape the Bronx with a win when TJ Buchanan’s 3-pointer put the Rams up 63-62 with 1:45 to play. But those would be the final points Rhode Island would score while Fordham made just enough free throws down the stretch to pick up the win.

Much to the dismay of URI, Fordham won the game at the charity stripe where they attempted 26 free throws in the second half alone. URI was whistled for a season-high 27 fouls in the game.

Neither team led by more than 6 throughout the entire game and neither team shot the ball particularly well with URI shooting 38% (18-47) from the field and 25% from three (6-24). Fordham shot 37% (22-60) from the field and 17% (3-18) from three.

A big reason Fordham attempted 13 more shots from the field was their ability to control the backboards. They outrebounded URI 45-34 including a 19-7 edge on the offensive glass. Fordham also dominated the paint outscoring URI 28-16 in the lane.

Mike Powell’s 14 points led the way offensively for URI. Andre Malone had 12 points while Nikola Malesevic, Xavier Munford and TJ Buchanan each netted 10.

Rhode Island drops to (1-4) in the Atlantic Ten and will host VCU Wednesday night at the Ryan Center.
