Exclusive: Baron Out at URI

Sunday, March 04, 2012

Coach Jim Baron

Jim Baron will be fired as early as today by the University of Rhode Island according to multiple sources.. Baron just completed his 11th season at URI and was never able to take the Rams to the NCAA Tournament. This year Baron's team finished 7-24 - a major disappointment for the Rams.

Sources close to the University's athletic program tell GoLocal that Baron final years of his contract will be paid by booster money - not paid with University funds.

Baron is signed through March 31, 2014 and his base salary is $348,000. in Addition, Baron is also guaranteed the gate receipts for one game. Other provisions of the contract are not public according to the University.

Baron Coached St. Francis and St. Bonaventure prior to taking over at Rhode Island in 2001-2002 season. His career record at URI is 184 wins and 165 loses.

Over $348,000 a year to coach a basketball team. What a joke.

historically, its just been really hardto recruit at
uri, look at the football team over the last 30 years
look at basketbal the last 30 years, except for the
lamar years, its always beentough to recruit

even with the ryan center, its still tough,
limited student support. almost no local support.
