Their third straight road game did them in.

The Rhody Rams took on a rather ambitious schedule to start the 2011-2012 season and it has taken its toll on the team. After this young Rams team showed encouraging signs in close losses at George Mason and Texas in their first two games, they got hammered by the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln Sunday 83-63.

While their first two games seemed to indicate that the Rams would be able to score on anyone while having trouble defending their opponents, Sunday’s loss featured poor offense (38% shooting) and poor defense (Nebraska 57% FG).

Less than a minute into the game Orion Outerbridge hit a 3-pointer to put URI up 3-2. It was their one and only lead of the entire game.

The Cornhuskers took control early. Leading 16-9 with 13:26 to play in the first half, Nebraska rattled off a 13-0 run making it 29-9 with 8 minutes to go in the half. It would pretty much remain a 20-point game for the remainder of the half with the Huskers leading 40-20 at the break.

Nebraska upped its lead to as much as 30-points when they led 59-29 with 12:59 to play. They would cruise home for the easy win.

Rhode Island was led by Outerbridge who finished with a double-double scoring 24 points and pulling down 10 boards. The Rams’ leading scorer Jamal Wilson was next with 14 points. Talented freshman Jonathan Holton struggled going 1-9 from the field, 0-5 from three point range while committing 4 turnovers.

Rhode Island (0-3) will be more than happy to return home to the Ryan Center where they will get their fill of home games over the weekend. Rhody plays its home-opener Friday at 5pm against Hofstra. The Rams will host Boston University the Saturday at 5pm and entertain Cleveland State at 2:30pm on Sunday.
