Last night on “Scott Cordischi On Sports” on Newstalk 630 WPRO & 99.7 FM, The Friars’ new men’s basketball coach refused to comment on the addition of Andre LaFleur to his staff or who will be filling what  role.

“I cannot comment on that at this time,” Cooley said when asked about luring LaFleur away from the University of Connecticut to join him at PC. And while Cooley did confirm that his 3 assistants from Fairfield will be on his staff here, he did say that “roles have not been defined yet.”

As was reported here on Friday, LaFleur will be Cooley’s associate head coach. The former Huskies’ assistant would not leave such a great situation unless the opportunity, and the money, was better elsewhere. That will be the case for LaFleur who could earn more than $200,000 dollars annually in his new role at Providence.

A source also tells GoLocalProv.com that Brian Blaney, son of UConn associate head coach George Blaney will be asked to be PC’s director of basketball operations which would be a slight step down from his former duties as assistant coach at Fairfield.

By Blaney occupying that role, that would mean that Bob Simon and Carmen Maciariello would be slotted in as Cooley’s second and third assistants respectively.

Providence College could announce, as soon as today, the hiring of LaFleur who took part in UConn’s championship parade through Harford on Sunday.

LaFleur’s former post at Connecticut will be filled by former Brown University and Penn head coach Glen Miller who served as UConn’s director of basketball operations this past season.
