Connecticut Beats Rhode Island To Win 8th Straight Governor’s Cup Game

Sunday, June 27, 2010

The Connecticut all-stars used a little razzle-dazzle on offense and a very solid defense to defeat Rhode Island 29-7 in the 2010 Governor’s Cup football game at UConn’s Rentschler Field Saturday night.

Bobby Wood received the handoff on a double-reverse pass play in the first quarter and proceeded to throw it to receiver Orlando Gaspard for a 48-yard touchdown leading Connecticut to their 8th  straight victory in the series.

A missed extra point kept it at a 6-0 Connecticut lead.  Rhode Island could muster up little offense against the Connecticut defense in the first half, but Connecticut would score again later in the first quarter when they caught the Rhode Island defense in a blitz.  Denzell Jones hit Ben Crick for a 25-yard touchdown on a screen pass.  The 2-point conversion failed making it 12-0 Connecticut.

Connecticut would add a 32-yard Steven Calitri field goal to make it 15-0 at the half.

The third quarter, however, belonged to Rhode Island.  A stingy Rhode Island defense led by LaSalle linebacker Will Deffley and Moses Brown defensive end Michael Yules stymied the Connecticut offense shutting them out in the third quarter.

Meanwhile, the only Rhode Island offensive production came in the third quarter as well.  East Providence QB Aaron Spivey hit Cranston East WR Jamal Jeanpierre for a big first down on 4thand 9.  A few tough runs by Barrington’s Michael Read put them into the endzone with 4:40 left in the third making it a one score game at 15-7.

But Connecticut would put the game away in the fourth quarter with two touchdowns by RB Julian Hayes.  His first came on a screen pass from Wood with 7:40 left in the game.  He would score later on a 6-yard touchdown run to make the final 29-7.

Michael Read was the offensive player of the game for Rhode Island while Brown University-bound Michael Yules grabbed defensive player of the game honors for Rhody.

Connecticut now leads the overall Governor’s Cup series 9-3 over Rhode Island with their 8 consecutive wins coming by an average margin of 24 points.

Those who have attended these games in recent years might wonder if the series is worth continuing or whether these two states should look for opponents of a similar level.  Rhode Island might want to contact the state of New Hampshire to set up an all-star series while Connecticut and Massachusetts would appear to be a good fit.
