Brown Wins Again! Downs Longwood 81-69
Saturday, November 23, 2013
Senior guard Sean McGonagill (Brookville, IL) and freshman forward Leland King (Inglewood, CA) combined for 38 points to lead Brown to its third straight victory, 81-69, over Longwood at Willett Hall Friday evening. The Bears played their fourth straight road game and improved to 4-1 with the victory, while Longwood falls to 2-2.
The final score was not indicative of the Bears’ total domination of the Lancers. Brown led by as many as 25 points in the second half, before Longwood made a late run after Brown head coach Mike Martin had cleared the bench.
The one constant in the Bears’ lineup is McGonagill, the Ivy League’s top scorer, who equaled his scoring average with 20 points, while grabbing seven rebounds. McGonagill climbed over the 1,200 point scoring mark at Brown, now with 1,213 career points, 14th best in Brown basketball history.
King scored in double figures for the second straight game, with a career high 18 points, on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. He also pulled eight rebounds and blocked four shots.
Freshman Norman Hobbie (Spring Lake, NJ) continued his torrid long range shooting for the Bears, scoring 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the three-point arc. Tavon Blackmon (Upper Marlboro, MD), Brown’s freshman point guard, ran the floor and scored 10 points and handed out seven assists.
Bears’ sophomore Cedric Kuakumensah (Worcester, MA), the Ivy League’s Defensive Player of the Year, scored just five points, but blocked five shots and pulled down six rebounds. Junior Rafael Maia (Sao Paulo, Brazil) chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds.
Tristan Carey led the Lancers with 21 points and a game high nine rebounds, while Jeylani Dublin added 12 points.
Brown led from start to finish and lead, and built a 17-point advantage at the half, 43-26, behind McGonagill’s 16 points, and King’s 12 points and seven rebounds.
An 8-0 run to open the half, six points by Maia and a two by McGonagill, extended the Bears’ lead to 25 points, 51-26, with 18:20 left in the game.
Every time Longwood made a run, Brown had a response. The Lancers got back in the game by scoring nine straight points in the next three minutes to trail 51-35, all on treys by Carey. The Bears responded with three consecutive treys – two Hobbie and one by King – for a 9-0 run to go back up again by 23 points, 60-35.
Brown will play its fifth straight road game, traveling to Smithfield, RI, for a Thanksgiving eve match-up against Bryant University on Wednesday, November 27. Tip-off at the Chace Center is 4:00 pm.
