Brown To Host RIIL Championships

When Jack Hayes took over as Brown University's new Athletic Director, he made it clear that he wanted to expose Brown Athletics and their facilities to as many Rhode Islanders as possible.  Part of his thinking was to attract more people to Brown so that they may come back to attend various athletic events at the school.  The other part was to make the school's athletic facilities available to the Rhode Island Interscholastic League to emphasize the fact that Brown is committed to being a strong member of the local community.

Wednesday, Hayes and RIIL Executive Director Tom Mezzanotte announced a new partnership that will bring various events to the Brown campus.  Here is the official press release:

Brown Athletics and the RhodeIsland Interscholastic League have reached an agreement for RIIL Championshipin basketball, ice hockey, swimming & diving, lacrosse and track &field to be held on the Brown University campus in an announcement made byBrown Athletic Director Jack Hayes and RIIL Executive Director Tom Mezzanotte.

“Brownis committed to supporting high school athletics and is thrilled to bepartnering with the Rhode Island Interscholastic League,” said Hayes. “Weare excited to welcome the many communities of Rhode Island to the Brown campusfor these championships.”

“Over the years the RIIL and countless student-athletes haveenjoyed a great relationship with Brown University,” said Mezzanotte. “Thanks to the encouragement and leadership ofBrown’s new Athletic Director Jack Hayes we are pleased to announce an expandedpartnership over the next three years. Through this partnership our high schoolathletes, fans and families will have the opportunity to visit the BrownUniversity Campus, and our championship teams will compete on some of the bestfacilities in Rhode Island.”

The RIIL Boy’s Basketball Divisional Championships (DI, DII,DIII) will be held at the Pizzitola Sports Center on February 24, 2013. Both the RIIL Boy’s and Girl’s Ice HockeyChampionship will return to Meehan Auditorium, March 6-18, 2013.

Lacrosse will be hosted at Stevenson Field’s new Poly Turfplaying surface with the RIIL Boy’s and Girl’s Lacrosse Championships beingheld May 29 & 30, and June 1 & 2, 2013. The Katherine Moran Coleman AquaticsCenter will be the site of the RIIL Boy’s & Girls Swimming & DivingChampionships, February 16 & 17, 2013, while the RIIL Boy’s and Girl’sTrack & Field Championships will be held at Brown Stadium on June 1, 2013.
